Whodunnit and why....
The Concerts In The Park were conceived by Steve Gifford, Gene James, and Missy Monsour
in May of 2000. The City had just finished a wonderful new stage set in a natural amphitheater in downtown
Greensburg's St. Clair Park. Sitting around Paddylong's one night, Missy observed that there wasn't much
happening there yet and while we had plenty of rock bands around town, there wasn't a venue to showcase folk,
jazz and blues talent. Steve, from the perspective of the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce, noted that an outdoor concert series could attract customers to the restaurants and bars in our downtown cultural district and build business. Gene said "I'm outta here!" but failed to make good his escape without being recruited to help organize the project.
We approached Mayor Karl Eisaman and City Council and they not only said "Go for it!,"
they gave us some seed money.
Small towns are so nice that way.
And so it began. We decided that we'd showcase western PA talent, focus on
outstanding musicians, and program an eclectic mix of styles that would appeal to a range of
tastes. We produced 6 great concerts that first year on a shoestring budget and drew crowds of
200 a night.
In this, our 10th season, we'll entertain 30,000 lucky music lovers with 13 great shows. We feature
mostly seasoned national and international touring acts and we stick to a
consistent schedule so folks will know that they can come most any Friday night and they'll
find GOOD music and a warm, friendly crowd. Tailgates, picnics, children, dogs... it's a
nice family thing....
Making all this possible, of course, requires much work. Most of it comes
from volunteers. Herewith we try to thank the kind people who have given their time and money
